ISLAMABAD – The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has declared the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activist Sanam Javed illegal, ordering her immediate release.

Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb of the IHC addressed the case, noting that the Balochistan police no longer sought her transit remand. The attorney general informed the court that Sanam Javed was now free to return to her home province.

During the hearing, the judge addressed Sanam Javed’s counsel, pointing out the activist’s previous use of inappropriate language online. He questioned whether Javed would refrain from such behavior in the future. The counsel assured the court that Sanam Javed would avoid using inappropriate language going forward.

Following the court’s ruling, the Islamabad police were barred from arresting Sanam Javed in any case. Justice Miangul Hasan Aurangzeb also instructed Javed to remain in Islamabad and refrain from making public statements.

This decision comes after the Lahore High Court dismissed a case against Sanam Javed related to the May 9 riots in Gujranwala. After being granted bail in all cases registered against her in Lahore, Sanam contested her physical remand in a new case in Gujranwala.

Despite being granted bail, the Islamabad police rearrested her as soon as she stepped out of the Central Jail of Gujranwala last Saturday. The IHC’s ruling, however, ensures her release and prevents any further arrests in connection with the current charges.

The court’s decision underscores the importance of adhering to legal procedures and respecting individual rights. It also highlights the judiciary’s role in safeguarding the rule of law and preventing unlawful detentions. The case of Sanam Javed serves as a reminder of the ongoing legal and political challenges in Pakistan, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance and adherence to due process.
