The Lahore Traffic Police has notified citizens of a significant increase in the driving license fee for cars and motorcycles, as decided by the provincial government.
In an announcement on X, the caretaker Punjab government disclosed a 1566% hike in the fee for obtaining a driver’s license, soaring from Rs. 60 to Rs. 1000.
Nevertheless, the traffic police assured citizens that they have until December 31 to acquire their licenses at the current rate. Commencing January 1, 2024, motorists will be required to pay Rs. 1000 as the license fee.
The decision of the provincial government has sparked widespread criticism on social media. Netizens argue that, at a time when motorists are increasingly adhering to traffic regulations, the substantial fee surge appears disproportionate.
Many have voiced concerns that this abrupt increase might discourage responsible driving practices, placing an unwarranted burden on law-abiding citizens actively contributing to road safety.
It’s worth noting that, in a previous move, the city traffic police had raised fines for learner’s permit holders. While the police declared that it would not register cases against learner’s permit holders, they will now face a fine of Rs. 2000.
