Protests Against High Electricity Bills Persist Nationwide
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterLinkedinWhatsapp

People across Pakistan are protesting the increased energy rates in order to put pressure on the government to provide relief.

The protesting masses have demanded that the government discontinue the distribution of free power to notables and provide them with assistance because the bills they have been receiving exceed their incomes.

Protests were organised in different parts of Karachi. People carrying banners and placards, as well as their children, protested the government for making their lives difficult.

Protests were held at Karachi’s Ayesha Manzil, Korangi, Five Star Chowrangi, Yaseenabad, Labour Square, and other neighborhoods. The outraged citizens set fire to their electricity bills.

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) have organised protests against rising electricity rates.

It should be noted that Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar presided over an emergency meeting at the Prime Minister’s House on Sunday, where the subject of rising electricity bills was discussed.

The caretaker PM was briefed on the July power bill increase during an emergency meeting called to address rising electricity prices.

The caretaker PM ordered that electricity sector changes and short, medium, and long-term plans be delivered as soon as possible. He requested that the relevant ministries furnish detailed information on the officers and institutions that are receiving free electricity.
