Antonio Guterres, the UNSG, has urged the interim Afghan government to prohibit terrorist groups from using Afghan territory to attack Pakistan. He has also urged the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and other international organizations to assist Pakistan in dealing with the prolonged devastation of the unusual floods.

At a year-end press conference held at UN Headquarters in New York, Guterres stated that the UN is in communication with the Afghan interim government.

According to him, they think the Taliban must deliver in order to protect both Afghanistan’s and the international community’s interests.

The UNSG also called on the IMF, World Bank, and the rest of the world to aid Pakistan in dealing with the fallout from the floods that devastated the nation between July and September.

The UNSG stated that Pakistan needs significant support because one-third of the nation was underwater when he was asked about what he anticipated from the Geneva meeting on January 9, which was intended to galvanize support for the flood-hit nation for restoration work.

The secretary-general and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will share hosting duties at the summit in Geneva.

Guterres said he is in contact with the IMF and World Bank and hoped these organizations would take noteworthy efforts to support Pakistan.

The UN chief said Pakistani people deserve and need a strong expression of international solidarity as floods affected 33 million and killed over 1700 people.
