December 16, 2024 – The Punjab Assembly has passed a bill that significantly increases the salaries of Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs) and other key officials, following a majority vote during its session.

Presented by Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, the bill introduces substantial pay raises across the board:

  • MPAs’ salaries have been increased from Rs76,000 to Rs400,000.
  • Provincial ministers will now earn Rs960,000, up from Rs180,000.
  • The Speaker of the Punjab Assembly’s salary will rise from Rs125,000 to Rs950,000.
  • The Deputy Speaker’s salary will increase from Rs120,000 to Rs775,000.
  • Parliamentary secretaries will now earn Rs451,000, compared to their previous salary of Rs83,000.
  • The pay for special assistants and advisers has jumped from Rs100,000 to Rs665,000.

The new salaries will take effect once the Punjab governor approves them. The last salary revision for Punjab Assembly members occurred in 2019.

This decision marks a significant adjustment in compensation for Punjab’s public representatives, with the aim of aligning salaries with current economic conditions.
