The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set to implement a significant change for its 11th season by introducing a player auction system, moving away from the traditional draft method used over the past decade. This change aims to improve competitive balance, increase transparency, and provide players with better earning opportunities, according to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

New Player Acquisition Rules

Under the new framework, each franchise can retain up to four players, with a limit of one player per category. This contrasts with the previous system where teams could retain eight players, including a mentor and brand ambassador, and had the option to match bids for a ninth player. The roles of mentors, brand ambassadors, and the right to match option have been removed for PSL 11.

Newly added teams will also have the opportunity to select and retain four players from the available pool before the auction begins. Additionally, each franchise is permitted one direct signing of a foreign player who did not participate in the previous season, allowing teams to bring in fresh international talent.

Increased Salary Purse and Expanded Venues

The salary purse for each franchise has been increased to $1.6 million, reflecting the league’s commitment to rewarding player performance and attracting high-caliber domestic and international cricketers. This financial boost is part of broader efforts to enhance the league’s commercial appeal and competitive standards.

PSL 11 will commence on March 26, with Faisalabad reintroduced as a venue for hosting matches. This addition broadens the league’s national presence and brings the city back into the cricketing spotlight.

Looking Ahead

The PCB has stated that further details regarding the auction process, schedule, and operational guidelines will be announced in due course. These changes underscore the league’s ongoing evolution and its dedication to promoting cricket excellence and engaging fans across Pakistan.
