On Sunday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced his plans to present Pakistan’s stance on the socio-economic difficulties faced by the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in Asia and Africa at the 5th United Nations Conference on LDCs taking place in Doha, Qatar.

The conference aims to discuss strategies to promote sustainable development and assist LDCs in their path toward prosperity. Invited by Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim ibn Hamad Al Thani, the Prime Minister emphasized that LDCs have been severely affected by climate change, the aftermath of the pandemic, and geo-strategic disruptions in food and energy supply chains, leaving them vulnerable.

PM Shehbaz emphasized the need to prioritize public welfare in policy-making to better serve the LDCs. The Prime Minister arrived in the Qatari capital to participate in the five-day conference, which began on the same day.

Tomorrow (Monday), PM Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to address the summit and conduct bilateral meetings with participating leaders and heads of the delegation during the conference. Sheikh Thani will host a reception to honor the dignitaries in attendance.

The global leaders will collaborate to mobilize additional international support measures and actions in favor of the LDCs, agreeing on a renewed partnership between the LDCs and their development partners. Pakistan has been an influential player at the UN platforms, advocating for sustainable development worldwide by amplifying the collective voice of the Global South.

As the chair of the Group of 77 and China in 2022, Pakistan actively supported LDCs and Qatar in securing the adoption of the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries by consensus and its endorsement by the UN General Assembly.
