ISLAMABAD — The Government of Pakistan and UN Women have agreed to strengthen their long-standing partnership to advance gender equality, broaden economic opportunities, and safeguard the fundamental rights of women and girls across the country.

The commitment was reaffirmed during a high-level meeting in Islamabad between Federal Minister for Law, Justice and Human Rights Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar and Mohammad Naciri, Chief of Staff to the Executive Director of UN Women.

Key Priorities of the Renewed Partnership

Finalizing National Policy on EVAWG: Both sides reviewed progress on the draft National Policy on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG). Developed with UN Women’s technical support following nationwide consultations, the comprehensive framework aims to unify provincial and federal mechanisms for prevention, survivor protection, and judicial response.

Improving Gender Data Systems: The discussions emphasized upgrading Pakistan’s national gender data ecosystem. Enhanced data collection will support evidence-based policymaking and streamline reporting under international commitments, such as CEDAW and the Beijing Declaration.

Tackling Digital & Tech-Facilitated Abuse: The delegation explored joint strategies to enhance digital inclusion and economic empowerment for women, alongside specific initiatives to counter technology-facilitated harassment, online abuse, and cyber-violence.

Regional Collaboration Ahead of SAARC: The meeting highlighted the upcoming SAARC Conference as a vital regional platform to foster cross-border consensus on inclusive governance, legal protections, and women’s economic participation across South Asia.

Official Statements

Federal Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar commended UN Women for its continuous support, underscoring the Ministry of Human Rights’ resolve to dismantle systemic barriers and expand legal access for women.

Government Outlook: “The government remains firmly committed to establishing a robust national framework that ensures safety, justice, and dignity for every woman and girl in Pakistan. Strengthening institutional coordination and policy enforcement is key to achieving sustainable progress,” Tarar stated.

Mohammad Naciri commended Pakistan’s active engagement in international gender forums—including its previous hosting of the 9th OIC Ministerial Conference on Women—and reaffirmed UN Women’s technical and operational backing for Pakistan’s ongoing legal and social reforms.
