The UN sustainable Development Report 2020 states that Pakistan has met with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 13 that calls for urgent actions to combat climate change and its impacts, all 10 years ahead of the deadline. This report is an annual assessment of countries’ steps in meeting the SDGs. ‘With the achieving of the Climate Action SDG 13, Pakistan has proved that it is committed to global efforts against the challenge of climate change to protect life on the planet earth’, says Malik Amin Aslam, adviser to the premier on climate change.

Climate Change

Talking of the government’s initiatives in this regard, he highlighted the 10 billion tree tsunami program, clean green Pakistan initiative and Eco-system restoration fund amongst many. According to German watch, he said that Pakistan was ranked fifth in the ranking of countries most affected by extreme weather conditions. He said that every country faced a climate crisis and that Pakistan was no exception when it came to facing the consequences.

He further went on that with the carbon emissions being at their highest now in human history, temperatures too were expected to go up over the 21st century unless serious steps were taken. Amin suggested that affordable solutions existed and only needed to be looked into. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor is also expected to be converted to the China Pakistan Green Economic Corridor. Here he added that this shift is enough to explain the government’s dedication and interest in creating a climate friendly environment, not only beneficial to Pakistan, but the world.
