Karachi Airport on High Alert Amid Heavy Rain Forecast in Metropolis

KARACHI – The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has issued a high alert for Karachi Airport in anticipation of heavy rain forecasted for the provincial capital. This precautionary measure comes as the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) predicts increased rainfall, wind, and thundershowers across several regions starting this week.

The CAA’s alert includes heightened surveillance of the runway and surrounding areas for the next 24 hours. It has instructed that small jets be moved to safer spots, their wings secured with weights. The alert also addresses concerns about potential insect and bird activity around the runways due to the wet conditions, deploying additional bird shooters as a precaution.

To prevent accidents during the expected downpour, the aviation authority is reinforcing tarmac joints with electric cables. Staff members have been directed to clear water drains on the runways to ensure proper drainage.

This proactive measure aligns with the PMD’s advisory that weak monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal are penetrating the upper and central parts of Pakistan, gaining strength from Monday. Additionally, a low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal is expected to impact Sindh, potentially bringing heavy rainfall to Karachi.

The Met Office has urged all relevant authorities to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to mitigate any potential issues arising from the heavy rain. This coordinated effort aims to ensure safety and minimize disruptions at Karachi Airport and within the city during the forecasted wet weather conditions.
