PM Reiterates Pakistan's Attachment to Purposes, Principles of UN Charter

PM Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan's steadfast commitment to multilateralism and the UN's central role in promoting international peace and development during his meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 81st UNGA session in New York. He reiterated Pakistan's strong attachment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and appreciated Guterres' leadership in upholding it.

Middle East and Palestine

The two leaders exchanged views on major regional and international developments, including the Middle East situation. Shehbaz stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving regional tensions and reaffirmed Pakistan's support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and statehood.

Islamophobia and Afghanistan

The PM sensitized Guterres on the rising trend of Islamophobia, particularly in Pakistan's immediate neighbourhood, calling for effective international action. The two also discussed the situation in Afghanistan and what Shehbaz described as a drastic increase in terrorism emanating from Afghan soil.

Guterres' Response

The Secretary-General commended Pakistan's leading role and strong voice at the UN, its contribution to international peace and security, and specifically appreciated Pakistan's mediation efforts for peaceful conflict resolution and regional stability. He also acknowledged Pakistan's role and sacrifices in countering terrorism.
