The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday directed the federal government to establish human rights courts this week.
IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah issued the directions during the hearing of a case related to the torture of the Adiala Jail prisoners.
The chief justice said that the cases of human rights violations will be heard in a special court. He said that there are strong laws related to human rights which can deal with violations.
Justice Minallah stated at the hearing that the court will not allow the infliction of torture on the detainees and that the cruel practice of detention torture needs to stop right away.
He commanded that the Punjab Inspectorate General of Prisons and the Adiala Jail superintendent be brought to justice.
At this, PTI leader Asad Umar said: “No one is safe now, not even Arshad Sharif”
According to the chief justice of the IHC, staff members even take away the food that visitors have provided for the convicts.
The court was informed by a representative of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) that 11 youngsters had been granted bail but had no place to go.
“Why shouldn’t we keep those children at the Prime Minister or Chief Minister’s House?” the chief justice questioned in response.
According to the HRCP secretary, there is only one male doctor for every 4,000 convicts, and around 1,400 prisoners are drug users.
Justice Minallah responded that HRCP has extensive authority and the ability to appoint consultants.
