The Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted the bail petition of former federal minister Sheikh Rasheed in a case of levelling allegations against former president Asif Ali Zardari.

Sheikh Rasheed, the leader of the Awami Muslim League (AML), was ordered released by a high court panel led by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani.

In the early hours of Thursday, February 2, he was taken into custody from his home in Rawalpindi and was being held on judicial detention after accusations were made against former president Asif Ali Zardari of devising a “murder plot” for Imran Khan.

After having his bail petition rejected by a district and sessions court, Rasheed has moved to IHC to get bail.

Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad said in his appeal that Asif Ali Zardari, the co-chairman of the PPP, was the target of his comments, but the former president had not filed a complaint against him.

The case that was filed against him, according to him, was “political victimisation.”

Sheikh Rasheed, the head of AML, was charged with three offences: 120B (criminal conspiracy), 153A (instigating hostility between groups), and 505. (statements conducing to public mischief).

According to the FIR filed by the complainant PPP divisional president, the AML chief attempted to discredit a former president and put the PPP co-chairman and his family in “permanent risk.”

Rasheed intends to disturb the peace of the country by inciting a conflict between the PTI and the PPP with his inflammatory charges, the FIR stated.
