GPAK Approves Rs1.4 Billion Metallizer Acquisition to Boost Value-Added Packaging Production

International Packaging Films Limited announced on Wednesday that its wholly owned subsidiary, Global Packaging Films (Private) Limited (GPAK), has approved the acquisition of a state-of-the-art metallizer at an estimated project cost of approximately Rs1.4 billion, a move aimed at expanding the company’s production capacity for higher-value packaging films.

The company disclosed the development in a formal notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Wednesday.

Part of a Broader Push Toward Value-Added Products

According to the notice, this investment forms part of the wider group’s ongoing strategy to increase the proportion of value-added products within its overall packaging films portfolio. Rather than simply expanding output of standard packaging films, the company appears to be deliberately steering its production mix toward higher-margin, more technically sophisticated products.

The company explained that the new metallizer will strengthen GPAK’s metallizing capabilities specifically, expand its production capacity for value-added metallized packaging films, enhance operational efficiencies, and support growing demand from both domestic and export markets.

What Metallizing Actually Involves

For those less familiar with the packaging industry, metallizing is a process that applies a thin layer of metal, typically aluminium, onto plastic films through vacuum deposition. This process gives packaging films valuable properties like enhanced barrier protection against moisture, oxygen, and light, along with an attractive reflective finish that’s widely used in food packaging, snack wrappers, and various consumer product applications where extending shelf life and product presentation both matter.

Metallized films generally command higher prices than standard, unmetallized packaging films because of the additional functional and aesthetic value they provide to brand owners and consumer product companies. By investing specifically in expanded metallizing capacity, GPAK appears to be positioning itself to capture a larger share of this higher-margin segment of the packaging films market, rather than competing purely on volume in the more commoditised segments of the industry.

A Company With a Relatively Short but Fast-Moving History

International Packaging Films Limited’s own corporate history offers useful context for understanding this latest investment. The company was established in Pakistan as a Greenfield project back in 2015, initially set up to manufacture Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) films. It was originally incorporated as a private limited company that same year before converting into a public limited company in 2021.

The company subsequently got listed on the Pakistan Stock Exchange in June 2024, a relatively recent listing that places it among the newer entrants to the exchange within the industrial manufacturing space. Since its establishment, the company has expanded its product range considerably and is now engaged in manufacturing and selling BOPP, CPP, and BOPET films for both domestic and international markets, a broader product portfolio than its original single-product focus at founding.

Why This Investment Makes Strategic Sense

Pakistan’s packaging films industry serves a fairly broad customer base, spanning food and beverage companies, consumer goods manufacturers, and various industrial applications that require protective, presentable packaging materials. As consumer product companies in Pakistan and export markets increasingly demand higher-quality packaging solutions, capacity for value-added products like metallized films becomes an increasingly important competitive differentiator for manufacturers in this space.

For a company like GPAK that has grown rapidly since its 2015 founding, expanding capacity in a higher-margin product category like metallized films represents a logical next step in its growth trajectory, potentially improving overall profitability per unit of production rather than relying purely on volume growth in more commoditised film categories.

A Sector With Growing Domestic Significance

This investment also arrives amid a broader context of growth within Pakistan’s packaging films sector more generally. The industry has seen increased attention in recent periods as domestic manufacturers work to reduce reliance on imported packaging materials while building capacity to serve both local demand and export opportunities more effectively.

Notably, this latest announcement follows earlier reporting in which International Packaging Films Limited stated it had become the largest flexible packaging films manufacturer in Pakistan, a claim that, if accurate, positions the Rs1.4 billion metallizer investment as an expansion move by an already leading player in the sector rather than an attempt by a smaller player to catch up with established competitors.

Looking Ahead

With the metallizer acquisition now approved at the board level, attention will likely turn to the project’s implementation timeline and how quickly the additional metallizing capacity comes online to meet the demand the company has cited from both domestic and export markets. For International Packaging Films Limited and its GPAK subsidiary, this investment represents a continuation of the aggressive growth strategy that has characterised the company’s trajectory since its 2015 founding, one that has already taken it from a single-product Greenfield project to a publicly listed manufacturer with a diversified films portfolio in just over a decade.
