General Motors revealed an electric sport utility vehicle with a $30,000 starting price, positioning the vehicle for buyers priced out of the expanding market.
The 2024 Equinox EV has a starting price of $30,000, which is less than half the average cost of EVs currently on the market and will be available in the fall of 2023.
Equinox EV will lead this charge for us, according to GM Chief Executive Mary Barra. “We are at a turning point where EVs will be the mainstream choice for the next generation of customers,” she added.
The introduction is a part of the auto giant’s aggressive EV build-out strategy, which includes battery factories and significant investment under its Ultium label, amid a steady industry-wide trend towards emission-free vehicles.
“We are bringing to market vehicles at nearly every price point and for every function because to the versatility of GM’s Ultium Platform,” said the company.
The Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was the most popular car produced by General Motors in 2021, followed by the gasoline-powered Equinox.
According to a news release from GM, the vehicle will be “the most affordable EV in its class” in the “small SUV segment.”
The Chevy Bolt, GM’s first cheap EV model, was subject to recalls because of battery issues.
At an event to introduce the electric Silverado, GM revealed in January that the Equinox would be targeted at middle-class consumers and that prices would begin at $30,000.
According to a Kelly Blue Book prediction from July 2022, the average cost of a new electric car was close to $67,000.
