LONDON: Dr. Muhammad Amjad Saqib, the renowned Pakistani social entrepreneur and founder of Akhuwat, has been awarded the prestigious Brain of the Year 2025 title by The Brain Trust. This recognition, presented annually, is the organization’s highest accolade, honoring individuals who have made remarkable contributions to mental health and cognitive well-being.

The announcement was made at a ceremony in the British House of Commons by Raymond Keene OBE, Chairman of The Brain Trust and Grand Chessmaster.

The Brain Trust, established in 1990 by Tony Buzan, the creator of Mind Maps, focuses on advancing global mental health through research, funding, and support for initiatives that enhance cognitive function and emotional healing.

Dr. Saqib, who founded Akhuwat, the world’s largest Islamic microfinance organization, was lauded for his dedication to improving the lives of underserved populations in Pakistan. His organization has provided over $1 billion in interest-free loans since its inception in 2001, benefiting over 6 million families.

In his remarks, Raymond Keene praised Dr. Saqib’s innovative approach to microfinance, which he described as not just alleviating poverty but uplifting human dignity. Keene emphasized, “Dr. Saqib’s work in fostering economic independence and his compassionate approach to social justice reflect the core values of The Brain Trust.”

Dr. Saqib’s leadership is seen as a model for how creative thinking and altruistic actions can address significant global challenges, especially in promoting mental well-being and community empowerment.

Dr. Saqib now joins an esteemed group of previous recipients, including Professor Stephen Hawking, Senator John Glenn, Garry Kasparov, and Baroness Susan Greenfield, all of whom have had a profound impact on their respective fields.

The award acknowledges Dr. Saqib’s tireless work in advancing social justice, empowering marginalized communities, and improving the lives of millions through Akhuwat’s pioneering microfinance model. His legacy stands as a testament to how one individual’s vision and commitment can transform society.
