China-Pakistan Joint Desert Horticulture Lab Opens in Multan to Transform Arid Farmlands
MULTAN — In a major breakthrough for agricultural innovation and regional climate resilience, Pakistan’s first-ever Joint Laboratory for Desert Agriculture and Science & Technology Backyard on Desert Horticulture has officially opened in Multan. Established as a collaborative venture between China’s Tarim University (based in Xinjiang) and Pakistan’s Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture (MNSUA) in Multan, the initiative aims to convert vast stretches of uncultivated desert land into highly productive, climate-smart agricultural fields.
Located along the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework, the project fuses China’s decades-tested desert farming techniques with Southern Punjab’s extensive land resources. By introducing advanced arid-land farming practices, precision technologies, and heat-resilient crop varieties, the joint laboratory directly addresses Pakistan’s growing challenges with water scarcity, extreme heatwaves, and soil degradation.
Cutting-Edge Technologies Introduced
The joint facility introduces a suite of modern agricultural tools tailored specifically for dryland and semi-desert terrain:
Solar-Powered Desert Greenhouses: Designed for high efficiency and low operational costs, these modular structures improve land-use efficiency by up to 35% compared to traditional greenhouse setups. Construction costs remain economical—estimated at PKR 11,000 to 12,500 per square meter—making rapid deployment feasible across local farming communities.
Water-Curtain Floor Heating (Root-Zone Warming): This technology captures and stores thermal solar energy during the day and gradually releases it at night, maintaining stable root temperatures and reducing overall greenhouse heating energy consumption by stabilizing internal microclimates.
Precision Irrigation & Water Conservation: High-efficiency drip irrigation systems and smart soil moisture sensors ensure that water is delivered directly to plant root zones, drastically cutting water wastage in dry environments.
Drone-Assisted Crop Monitoring: Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) equipped with multispectral sensors enable continuous tracking of crop health, pest detection, and precise fertilizer application across expansive desert acreage.
Tackling Water Scarcity and Food Security
With nearly 15% of Pakistan’s total land area categorized as uncultivated or arid desert, expanding agricultural production onto marginal lands is essential for national food security. Traditional farming in Southern Punjab often faces intense summer temperatures and dwindling groundwater supplies.
By cultivating drought-resistant horticultural crops—such as high-value fruits, vegetables, and medicinal plants—the Multan facility demonstrates how modern technology can overcome harsh environmental constraints.
“This partnership provides a concrete mechanism to transfer proven desert-farming techniques directly to local growers. By combining China’s technical expertise with Pakistani field conditions, we are creating a sustainable pathway to turn barren sands into prosperous green hubs,” noted lead researchers overseeing the project’s launch.
Human Capital Development & Academic Exchange
Beyond physical research facilities, the “Science and Technology Backyard” model integrates classroom education directly with practical, on-farm experience. The joint project establishes a structured framework for long-term capacity building:
Postgraduate & Faculty Exchanges: Joint master’s and doctoral training schemes will allow Pakistani students and researchers to study at Tarim University in Xinjiang, working alongside Chinese desert farming specialists.
Germplasm Resource Sharing: Both institutions will exchange resilient seed strains and crop germplasm to breed high-yielding, heat-tolerant plant varieties suitable for local soil profiles.
Hands-On Farmer Training: Local farmers in the Multan region will receive direct training in greenhouse assembly, modern pruning, water management, and organic soil enrichment techniques.
Alignment with National Goals & Future Outlook
The establishment of the Desert Horticulture Lab aligns seamlessly with Pakistan’s national climate adaptation strategies and the Green Pakistan Initiative, which prioritizes reforestation, land restoration, and modern corporate farming practices.
