The formal appointment follows the official resignation of Keir Starmer, who stepped down as Prime Minister after a tumultuous two-year tenure marked by political missteps and falling local election support. After falling short in the 2010 and 2015 Labour leadership contests, Burnham rebuilt his political base regionally before returning to Westminster as the MP for Makerfield in a recent by-election. Following Starmer’s resignation announcement, Burnham secured an overwhelming 90% of backing from Labour lawmakers to be formally announced as the new party leader.
Because Labour maintains a commanding 166-seat working majority in the House of Commons, Burnham automatically steps into the premiership without the immediate need for a national general election.
