ISLAMABAD — The British High Commission in Islamabad hosted a special reception to celebrate the official opening of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. Bringing together diplomats, sports figures, civil society representatives, and young leaders, the event highlighted the deep-rooted sporting and cultural ties connecting the United Kingdom, Pakistan, and the wider Commonwealth family.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, running from July 23 to August 2, 2026, welcome around 3,000 athletes representing 74 Commonwealth nations and territories. Competitors are set to challenge for medals across 10 sports, including six integrated Para sports, showcasing extraordinary athletic achievement and inclusive competition.
Celebrating Sport, Unity, and Shared Commonwealth Values
Addressing attendees at the reception, British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott emphasized the transformative impact of international sporting events. She noted that the Commonwealth Games transcend traditional athletic rivalries to foster lasting international friendships.
“The Commonwealth Games are about more than medals,” High Commissioner Jane Marriott stated. “They bring people together, celebrate talent, and show the power of sport to unite communities. Honoring Outstanding Pakistani Youth Leaders
Highlighting the Commonwealth’s commitment to youth empowerment, education, and social development, the British High Commission held a ceremony prior to the main reception to honor four exceptional Pakistani recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Commonwealth Trust 100 Young Leaders Awards.
The awardees were recognized for their trailblazing contributions across key social sectors:
Farah Gul Rahuja: Co-founder of PakGPT, recognized for harnessing inclusive artificial intelligence to improve education, healthcare, and climate resilience in underserved communities.
Hassan Ashraf: Founder and CEO of the Umeed Foundation, honored for expanding free, quality education opportunities to child laborers and underprivileged youth.
Hadiqa Bashir: Founder and Executive Director of Girls United for Human Rights, awarded for her courageous advocacy against gender-based violence and her work promoting girls’ education.
Joshua Dilawar: Founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Social and Youth Development (ISYD), recognized for driving youth empowerment, social cohesion, and inclusion initiatives.

Pakistan enters the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with a focused delegation of 20 athletes competing across six sporting disciplines, including athletics, boxing, artistic gymnastics, judo, lawn bowls, and swimming.
Reigning Olympic champion javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem served as Pakistan’s flagbearer during the vibrant opening ceremony at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro arena. Boxer Fatima Zahra carried the Commonwealth baton, representing the aspirations of Pakistani youth on the international stage.
The 2026 edition in Glasgow marks a pioneering moment for the Commonwealth Games Federation. Operating under an innovative, sustainable, and low-carbon event model, the 11-day festival utilizes existing world-class venues within an eight-mile urban corridor in Glasgow. This streamlined model sets a sustainable benchmark for future international multi-sport host cities.
