Anum Uzair Conquers Pakistan’s First 100km Galiyat Mountain Trail Ultra Marathon
ISLAMABAD / ABBOTTABAD — In an extraordinary display of human endurance, mental grit, and athletic brilliance, Pakistani mountaineer and trail runner Anum Uzair has etched her name into the nation’s sports history by winning the inaugural 100-kilometer Galiyat Mountain Trail Ultra Marathon.
Organized in the breathtaking yet unforgiving Himalayan foothills of the Abbottabad District, the 100km event marked the first time a trail race of this length was hosted in Pakistan. Crossing the finish line with unwavering determination, Uzair did not merely claim a trophy—she set a precedent for women’s endurance sports across the region.
Conqueror of the Unforgiving Trail
The 100km Galiyat Mountain Trail is renowned as one of the most demanding endurance courses in South Asia. Connecting high-altitude ridge lines between Thandiyani and Khaira Gali, the course features brutal ascents over peaks like Miranjani Top—reaching an altitude of nearly 2,955 meters—and total elevation gains exceeding 4,400 meters.
Runners navigated a hazardous mix of dense alpine forests, unpredictable mountain weather, steep drop-offs, and exposure to wild fauna. Reflecting on the extreme environment, Uzair noted that ultra-trail running presents psychological hurdles similar to high-altitude mountaineering.
“The risks in mountain running are very real—from sudden lightning strikes to encountering wild animals on isolated stretches,” Uzair shared following her victory. “During a previous 40km training run, I found myself just 200 feet away from a wild leopard. Moments like that force you to confront and conquer your fear. Once you overcome fear, you can lock your focus entirely on the goal.”
A Multifaceted Role Model: Balancing Life, Science, and Sport
Anum Uzair’s path to the podium is as remarkable as the race itself. A forensic scientist by profession and a mother of two, Uzair represents a growing wave of modern Pakistani athletes breaking traditional societal molds.
Alongside her husband, Uzair Ahmed, she forms half of the first Pakistani couple to summit an 8,000-meter peak—Mount Manaslu in Nepal. She has also climbed Broad Peak and led pioneering high-altitude expeditions.
When asked how she balances intense trail endurance training with family life and professional responsibilities, Uzair pointed to the flexibility of mountain running.
“Trail running demands intense preparation, but compared to month-long mountaineering expeditions, it allows me to manage my athletic ambitions alongside my duties as a mother,” she explained.
Her relentless daily fitness regimen includes climbing the equivalent of 100 flights of stairs, maintaining year-round conditioning to handle any challenge the outdoors demands.
Dedicating Victory to the Women of Pakistan
Upon receiving her trophy and finisher’s medal, Uzair dedicated her milestone victory to the women of Pakistan, particularly female athletes striving to break into non-traditional sports.
Empowerment Through Sport: Uzair highlighted that women belong in high-altitude environments and competitive athletics just as much as anyone else.
Global Aspirations: She expressed her ambition to represent Pakistan on the international ultra-running circuit and earn world-recognized ranking points on platforms like the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) and the UTMB World Series.
Promoting Fitness: She urged citizens across the country to prioritize health and physical activity, emphasizing that fitness is a vital lifestyle choice regardless of whether one competes professionally.
Boosting Mountain Sports and Tourism in Pakistan
The success of the Galiyat Mountain Trail Ultra Marathon highlights Pakistan’s immense potential as a international destination for eco-tourism and mountain sports. Certified by international trail authorities, the event attracted hundreds of participants across various distance categories, putting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s scenic trails on the global adventure map.
