A joint sitting of the Parliament will be held at Parliament House in Islamabad at four pm on Monday. Nevertheless, despite the joint sitting, the Senate will resume today, as has already occurred, according to constitutional experts. The timing of Monday’s session was already adjusted by Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani from 4 p.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday.
According to a formal statement, the schedule was changed because of the joint parliamentary session. Despite calls for a discussion on the terrorism issue from numerous politicians, including those in the ruling coalition, the previous joint sitting, which took place last Wednesday, only covered six items.
The Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government (Amendment) Act, 2022 was approved that day during the joint sitting with one amendment. The National Assembly and Senate approved the law’s text a month ago, allowing Islamabad’s mayor and deputy mayor to be elected directly.
Wednesday’s joint session adopted an amendment put forth by PML-N senator Rana Maqbool Ahmad Khan, eliminating Clause 3 of the previously passed bill and returning the mayor and deputy mayor of Islamabad’s municipal corporation to indirect elections.
