Sindh Government Fast-Tracks Rs18.2 Billion Solar Project to Empower 275,000 Low-Income Households:

KARACHI: In a major push toward renewable energy and economic relief, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has directed provincial officials to accelerate the distribution and installation of free solar home systems under the province’s landmark Rs18.2 billion initiative.

Presiding over a high-level review meeting on Friday, the Chief Minister emphasized that the project must stay on schedule to provide immediate relief to underprivileged families facing the brunt of inflation and skyrocketing electricity tariffs. The ambitious program aims to equip 275,000 low-income households across Sindh with sustainable, reliable, and affordable power.

Prioritizing Remote and Underserved Communities

During the briefing, Chief Minister Shah highlighted that the primary focus of the initiative must remain on deserving families, particularly those residing in off-grid, remote, and historically underserved rural pockets of the province.

“Access to affordable and clean energy is essential for improving the living standards of underprivileged families and reducing the crushing financial burden caused by rising electricity costs,” Shah stated, urging inter-departmental collaboration to prevent bureaucratic delays.

To ensure the project’s long-term success, the Chief Minister ordered the establishment of strict monitoring protocols. Key directives issued to the relevant departments include:

Equitable Distribution: Implementing a transparent, data-driven selection mechanism to guarantee that only eligible, low-income beneficiaries receive the systems.
Technical Oversight: Ensuring rigorous monitoring of installation standards to prevent technical failures.
Long-Term Sustainability: Setting up accessible technical support and localized after-sales maintenance networks so the systems remain functional for years to come.

A Dual Approach to the Energy Crisis

The Solar Home Systems Project is a core component of a broader renewable energy strategy unveiled during the presentation of the Sindh Budget for the fiscal year 2026–27. Recognizing that the energy crisis affects multiple economic tiers, the provincial government has adopted a two-pronged strategy:

The Free Solar Program: An Rs18.2 billion fully subsidized initiative targeting 275,000 of the province’s poorest households.
Subsidized Solar Financing: A separate relief program designed for middle-income families, offering subsidized financing options to help them transition to solar power and lower their monthly utility bills.

Leading Pakistan’s Green Transition

The Sindh government has positioned this initiative as one of the largest and most comprehensive provincial solar programs in Pakistan’s history. By transitioning a massive block of domestic consumers to decentralized green energy, the project is expected to reduce the strain on the national grid while actively lowering the province’s overall carbon footprint.

Provincial departments have been instructed to submit regular progress reports, with the Chief Minister reiterating that transparency, speed, and technical quality will not be compromised as the rollout begins across the province.
