Pakistan in contact with US over immigrant visa processing matter: FO

Pakistan is currently in communication with United States authorities concerning the recent halt in immigrant visa processing, which affects 75 countries including Pakistan. This development follows a US State Department announcement regarding a review of immigration procedures.

Ongoing Dialogue on Visa Processing

Foreign Office Spokesperson Tahir Andrabi addressed the issue during a press briefing in Islamabad, stating that Pakistan is seeking further information from US officials about the situation. He described the US announcement as an internal review of immigrant visa processing systems.

“We understand this is an ongoing internal process,” Andrabi remarked, adding, “We hope that routine immigrant visa processing will resume soon.”

US State Department’s Position

The US State Department recently declared a pause on immigrant visa issuance for 75 countries, citing concerns over migrants relying excessively on public welfare programs. The freeze will continue until the US can confirm that new immigrants will not be a financial burden on American taxpayers.

A memo reportedly distributed to consular officers worldwide directs refusal of immigrant visas under existing legal frameworks during this review period.

Pakistan’s Regional and International Stance

In addition to immigration matters, Andrabi commented on Pakistan’s monitoring of the situation in Iran, expressing a desire for a peaceful resolution and a return to normal conditions. He also condemned any violations of sovereignty, specifically referencing an attack on Somalia’s territorial integrity as unacceptable and contrary to international law.

Overall, Pakistan continues to observe these developments closely while maintaining diplomatic engagement on multiple fronts.
