Pakistan Navy Demonstrates Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Capabilities in North Arabian Sea Exercise

The Pakistan Navy recently conducted a detailed and extensive naval exercise in the northern Arabian Sea, successfully firing a surface-to-air missile that showcased its modern air defence proficiency. This exercise was announced by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on January 10, 2026.

Exercise Highlights

  • Surface-to-Air Missile Firing: The Navy executed a live firing of the LY-80 (N) surface-to-air missile from a vertical launching system, achieving a precise hit on an aerial target at an extended range. This demonstrated the long-range operational capability of Pakistan Navy’s air defence systems.
  • Loitering Munition Strikes: The drill also featured successful engagements against surface targets using loitering munitions, confirming the Navy’s enhanced precision strike capacities.
  • Unmanned Surface Vessel Trials: Open-sea trials were conducted for an unmanned surface vessel, highlighting significant advancements in autonomous naval technologies. The platform showed exceptional speed, durability, sharp manoeuvrability, accurate navigation, and resilience in challenging weather conditions.

Significance and Leadership Endorsement

The Pakistan Fleet commander personally observed the exercise, which underlined the Navy’s capabilities in deploying advanced combat systems. Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of Naval Staff, praised the professionalism and operational skill demonstrated by the officers involved. He reiterated the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding Pakistan’s maritime boundaries and national interests under all conditions.

These developments reflect the Pakistan Navy’s ongoing efforts to keep pace with evolving maritime warfare demands by integrating conventional and unmanned systems to maintain operational readiness and strengthen defence resilience.
