Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has urged the international community to press the Afghan Taliban to fulfil their global commitments and take decisive action against terrorist groups operating from Afghan soil.

Speaking at an international forum in Ashgabat marking the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality, PM Shehbaz emphasised that terrorism remains a common threat that requires collective action. He stated that Pakistan seeks strong global backing to ensure Afghanistan reins in militant groups that threaten regional stability.

The premier thanked Qatar, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the UAE for their efforts in brokering a ceasefire between Pakistan and Afghanistan — a ceasefire he described as fragile but holding. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to resolving disputes peacefully and lauded the UN Security Council’s adoption of resolution 2788, which endorses peaceful settlement mechanisms.

PM Shehbaz also voiced deep concern for Gaza, expressing hope that ongoing diplomatic efforts would help protect innocent Palestinians and lead to a permanent ceasefire. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for both the Palestinian and Kashmiri people.

Focus on Development, Climate & Connectivity

The prime minister highlighted the strong link between sustainable development and global peace. He underscored Pakistan’s strides in financial inclusion, women’s empowerment, and climate resilience, while noting the significant challenges posed by climate disasters and global economic inequalities.

He called climate change, poverty, and inequality “transnational threats” that require unity, shared responsibility, and equitable access to advanced technologies. PM Shehbaz urged leaders to shift from conflict-driven mindsets to purposeful cooperation built on connectivity, diplomacy, and trust.

Meetings with World Leaders

On the sidelines of the forum, PM Shehbaz met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, reaffirming deep fraternal ties and cooperation in energy, minerals, investment, and privatisation. Both leaders also exchanged views on global developments and Gaza, with PM Shehbaz praising Erdoğan’s leadership.

He also held brief interactions with leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, and Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov.

Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar separately met with the foreign ministers of Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Turkiye, and Oman to discuss regional stability, trade, connectivity, and bilateral progress.

PM Shehbaz concluded by urging world leaders to let the “dove of peace take flight once more,” calling the forum a rallying point for global unity, dialogue, and cooperation.
