Iran's Top General Meets Pakistani Leaders to Discuss Security and Border Management

Iran’s Chief of General Staff, Maj. Gen. Mohammad Bagheri, met with key Pakistani civilian and military leaders on Monday to discuss regional security, counter-terrorism measures, and joint border management, according to Pakistani officials.

The discussions come amid longstanding challenges along the porous Pakistan-Iran border, where both countries have often traded accusations over militancy. Tensions peaked last year in January when Pakistan and Iran exchanged airstrikes, each targeting alleged militant hideouts in the other’s territory.

General Bagheri’s two-day visit aims to strengthen security collaboration and foster closer economic ties along the shared border, Iranian media reported ahead of his arrival in Pakistan on Sunday night.

Meetings with Pakistani Leadership

On Monday, the Iranian general met with President Asif Ali Zardari, Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, and Army Chief General Asim Munir.

During his meeting with President Zardari, discussions focused on enhancing bilateral trade and economic relations. Both sides emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to combat terrorism, which they identified as a shared challenge.

Defense Minister Asif expressed satisfaction with the growing cooperation between the two nations, highlighting advancements in joint border management and counter-terrorism initiatives.

At the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, General Bagheri was welcomed with a guard of honor before holding talks with General Asim Munir. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), discussions revolved around the regional security environment and expanding bilateral defense cooperation.

Historical Context and Recent Engagements

Efforts to ease tensions and enhance cooperation between the two neighbors have gained momentum in recent years. In April 2024, the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi visited Pakistan, resulting in several agreements spanning trade, technology, agriculture, health, and cultural cooperation.

This was followed by a visit from Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in November 2024, where he engaged with Pakistani leadership on Middle East issues, including the Israel-Gaza conflict, and discussed strengthening bilateral ties.

The latest visit by General Bagheri reflects a continuation of these diplomatic efforts, underscoring the importance of mutual collaboration in addressing regional and security challenges.
