DOHA – Funeral prayers for Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of Hamas, were conducted in Doha, the capital of Qatar, following his assassination. The prayers took place at the Imam Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab Mosque after the Friday prayers. The ceremony saw the presence of several prominent leaders and a large number of attendees who came to pay their respects.

Haniyeh will be buried at a cemetery in Lusail. His death occurred in an airstrike in Tehran on Wednesday, with the resistance group Hamas attributing the attack to Israel and vowing retaliation.

According to Iranian media, Haniyeh was killed in an airstrike that targeted his residence in northern Tehran around 2 a.m. local time (10:30 GMT). The strike hit a guesthouse where he was staying after attending the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s new president.

Earlier, on the previous day, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, led a funeral prayer for Haniyeh at the University of Tehran. The service was attended by thousands, including remarks from Iran’s parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who lauded Haniyeh as a pivotal figure for the Palestinian cause.

In a related development, the National Assembly of Pakistan unanimously passed a resolution condemning the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh and denouncing the ongoing Israeli actions in Gaza. The resolution, supported by both government and opposition lawmakers, expressed condolences to Haniyeh’s family and called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
