Police imprisoned former interior minister and Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rasheed on Tuesday after his bail in the May 9 riots case was cancelled.
Heikh Rasheed appeared before the ATC for confirmation of bail in 14 instances involving the May 9 disturbances. He was granted bail in thirteen cases, but it was denied in the New Town police station case.
After the termination of his release, he was hauled into arrest by police outside the court.
Rasheed is accused of preparing vandalism and an attack on a sensitive installation on May 9, shortly after the former prime minister was arrested.
On Monday, the ex-minister, apprehensive of potential arrest, declared his intent to run for election even from behind bars.
It’s noteworthy to highlight that last year, Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, the head of Awami Muslim League (AML), strongly criticized the riots on May 9 and labeled the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief as ‘stubborn.’
In an interview with a private news channel, the former interior minister disclosed that he had been in seclusion, referred to as a ‘Chilla,’ for the past 40 days. Sheikh Rasheed emphasized that this period underground provided him with the opportunity for contemplation, stating, “I had the chance to reflect on many aspects during this chilla. Fortunately, no one suffered any harm during this period.”
