Children in Gaza face 'life-threatening' malnutrition, warns UNICEF

In a dire situation, UNICEF, the UN agency for children, has issued a stark warning about the imminent threat of “the most life-threatening form of malnutrition” affecting over 10,000 children under the age of five in Gaza.

The agency is urgently calling for emergency food supplements to address this critical issue.

Moreover, UNICEF has expressed deep concerns for the well-being of more than 135,000 children under two years old and over 155,000 pregnant and nursing Palestinian women trapped in the besieged Gaza Strip. The region is grappling with the impending collapse of both food and health infrastructures.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, UNICEF has emphasized the immediate need for a humanitarian ceasefire to allow support for the strengthening and restoration of essential services throughout Gaza.

The statement underscores the critical requirement for rebuilding infrastructure, particularly hospitals, to ensure that young children, pregnant women, and injured patients can access life-saving treatment and care safely.

The plea from UNICEF signals a call for swift and sustained humanitarian efforts to alleviate the worsening crisis and prevent further harm to the vulnerable population in Gaza.

Acute food insecurity puts all children under five in the #Gaza Strip—335,000—at high risk of severe malnutrition and preventable death.
