After the government and opposition failed to reach an agreement, the decision to appoint a caretaker chief minister in Balochistan was delegated to a parliamentary committee.
According to the law, a choice had to be made within three days following the dissolution of the provincial legislature, and Tuesday was the deadline for finalising a name.
According to sources, Balochistan’s Chief Minister, Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, and the Leader of the Opposition, Malik Sikandar, offered Mir Ali Mardan Khan Domki’s name as interim chief minister yesterday.
Earlier in the day, the two discussed the names of potential candidates for the position of interim chief minister in order to achieve an agreement.
According to sources, while the name Ali Mardan Domki was discussed between the two leaders, CM Bizenjo refused to sign a summary naming Mr Domki as his successor.
Mr Domki and former Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Alyani also met with caretaker PM Kakar in Islamabad on Tuesday.
What does Constitution say?
If the chief minister and the opposition leader fail to achieve an agreement on an acceptable name for interim chief minister within the statutory time frame, the case will be sent to a parliamentary committee.
The chief minister and the opposition leader would each submit three names to the parliamentary committee.
If the committee is unable to reach an agreement, the subject will be referred to the Election Commission of Pakistan, which will make a final decision.
