The Senate unanimously approved an amendment bill to the Election Act 2017 on Friday, eliminating the permanent disqualification of MPs under Article 62 (1) (f).

The bill introduced by Minister of State for Law Shahadat Awan amends the Elections Act of 2017.

According to the proposed change, disqualification of a legislator will be considered for 5 years if the punishment’s term is not stipulated in the constitution. Sections of the statute will apply where the tenure and procedure for disqualification are unclear.

On the directives of the Supreme Court or high courts, the person’s disqualification will be considered for five years.

The disqualification will be for five years, according to Article 62-1F, and the individual will be eligible to run for office and become a member of the Parliament or provincial assembly, according to the proposed modification to the Election Act.

Azam Nazeer Tarar, Minister for Law, stated that the Election Commission of Pakistan will now be able to announce the dates for the general elections under this bill.

Former Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, who supported the measure, stated that it is equivalent to preserving Pakistan’s future generations.

“The Members of the Senate Salaries and Allowances Bill 2023” was likewise unanimously passed by the House.
