PEMRA urges media to boycott responsibles of May 9 violence

PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority) has encouraged the media to boycott individuals responsible for the May 9 violence.

According to reports, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority published laws for all television channels stating that every citizen has the right to free expression except in exceptional circumstances.

The media watchdog said that statements which may incite violence, hatred and threat to peace of the society, are banned.

According to PEMRA, the May 9 riots threatened people’s lives, and state structures and military sites were damaged. One political party engaged in anti-state actions and efforts were made to instill contempt for the state and its institutions.

Previously, the Supreme Court (SC) ruled that the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory jurisdiction (PEMRA) lacked the legal jurisdiction to suspend any TV channel’s licence.

The Court cited Section 13 of the PEMRA regulation, which provides unequivocally that neither the Chairman nor any other individual has the right to suspend a licence.

It is worth noting that the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has issued an immediate ban on broadcasting ‘live and recorded’ speeches and news conferences by former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on all satellite TV networks.
