After almost three years, the Khunjerab Pass between Pakistan and China is now open to all types of traffic. In a statement released in Gilgit, Rana Muhammad Saleem Afzal, the home secretary for Gilgit-Baltistan, reaffirmed this.
In the wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020, the main commerce route between the two countries was shut down. The three-year closure of the Khunjerab border resulted in financial difficulties for the local business community and resulted in a significant number of job losses.
Trade between Pakistan and China through the Khunjerab Pass begins on April 1 and ends on November 30 each year, under a treaty struck between the two nations. Earlier, to meet Pakistan’s urgently needed supplies, the border was temporarily opened twice this year in January and February.
