Pakistan and the United States (US) have agreed to advance the transition to renewable energy as both governments committed to working together to help Pakistan reach its goal of 60 percent renewables by 2030.

The agreement was made at the Energy Security Dialogue in Islamabad, which was presided over by US Department of State Assistant Secretary for Energy Resources Geoffrey Pyatt and Minister for Energy Khurram Dastgir Khan.

The United States and Pakistan reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing the switch to renewable energy sources and fostering a more stable, secure, and prosperous energy future for both countries in a joint statement released by the US Embassy.

Authorities and experts discussed energy-related concerns and potential areas of collaboration, such as Pakistan’s transition to renewable energy, and electric vehicles, and raising the proportion of women working in the energy industry.

Through the framework of the US-Pakistan “Green Alliance,” both countries decided to keep strengthening their bilateral ties. The Green Alliance framework would aid Pakistan and the United States in addressing their shared economic, environmental, and climate change needs, particularly through collaboration on clean, sustainable, and renewable energy sources, it was said.

Both the US and Pakistan acknowledged their long histories of working to enhance economic sustainability and energy cooperation. According to the statement, “the United States has invested in Pakistan’s power generation for more than 50 years, including in clean energy through hydropower, which continues to help millions of Pakistanis today.

The two governments reaffirmed their commitments to deepen energy cooperation through the Energy Security Dialogue.

The US has announced new initiatives in Pakistan, including a $500,000 project to rebuild electricity infrastructure in Sindh flood-affected areas, a grant to Lahore University for Management Science to advance research and development of electric vehicles, and support for a second cohort of the Future of Women in Energy Scholars Program, which the US-Pakistan Women’s Council launched with Texas A&M University to support women’s leadership in renewable energy.
