As the natural disaster claimed thousands of lives and wrecked countless homes, a Pakistani living in the United States anonymously “donated $30 million to the Turkish embassy” for the earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria.
Over 24,000 people have died as a result of the deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria early on Monday; there are no longer any signs of any more survivors.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif tweeted that he was “very moved by the example of an anonymous Pakistani who came into the Turkish embassy in the US and contributed $30 million for earthquake victims in Türkiye and Syria,” confirming the donation that had been reported by Turkish media.
“These are such glorious acts of philanthropy that enable humanity to triumph over the seemingly insurmountable odds,” he added.
In a video shared on Twitter, TRT World journalist Yousuf Erim also appreciated the move and said: “Individuals, a Pakistani businessman walked into the Turkish embassy in the United States and anonymously donated $30 million by himself. We don’t know who he is. His identity has not been revealed.
The editor-in-chief of The Election Post, Mustafa Tanyeri, reported that Turkey’s ambassador to Washington, Murat Mercan, claimed that one Pakistani billionaire provided $30 million to the charity drive that was started in the US.
