ChatGPT, a well-known chatbot from OpenAI, is believed to have amassed 100 million monthly active users in January, just two months after its debut, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history.

According to the analysis, which used data from the analytics company Similarweb, ChatGPT saw more than twice as many unique visitors in January than it did in December—an average of approximately 13 million per day.

UBS analysts stated in the report that they “cannot recall a faster climb in a consumer internet app in 20 years of tracking the internet space.” According to data from Sensor Tower, Instagram took two and a half years to achieve 100 million users after its global launch, whereas TikTok took around nine months.

In response to instructions, ChatGPT can produce articles, essays, jokes, and even poetry. In late November, OpenAI, a private firm supported by Microsoft Corp., made it freely accessible to the general public.

OpenAI introduced a $20 monthly subscription on Thursday, initially available to users solely in the United States. The company said that it will offer a faster, more stable service as well as the chance to test out new features in advance.

Analysts predict that the success of ChatGPT will offer OpenAI a competitive edge over rival AI firms. The increasing usage has increased OpenAI’s computing costs but has also given useful feedback for refining the chatbot’s responses.

The company said the subscription revenue would help cover the computing cost. The tool’s accessibility has sparked concerns about its potential to encourage academic dishonesty and false information. Microsoft revealed a new multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI last month, this time in the form of cash and cloud computing services.
