Pakistan Releases 20 Indian Fishermen on Humanitarian Basis

Pakistan on Sunday, 19th June 2022 released 20 Indian fishermen detained in the Malir Jail in Karachi. The fishermen are being transferred to Wagha border Lahore to be handed over to India.

The recent release of 20 Indian national fishers is a small step towards peace between the two countries. However, there are still hundreds of prisoners from India who are being held in Pakistani jails. It is hoped that with continued dialogue and diplomacy, the two countries can eventually resolve their differences and free all prisoners.

Pakistan has a higher rate of freeing Indian prisoners than the Indian rate of freeing Pakistan prisoners.

Earlier in April 2019, Pakistan released 360 Indian prisoners as the nuclear-armed neighbour scaled back from a confrontation that prompted world powers to urge restraint.

The Indian prisoners were released from various jails in Pakistan and handed over to Indian authorities at the Wagah border crossing, officials said.

The release of the prisoners came as Pakistan and India, who have fought three wars since they gained independence from British rule in 1947, pulled back from the brink of a fourth conflict.

In August 2018, as a humanitarian gesture to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day on 14 August 2018, Pakistan released 30 Indian prisoners, 27 of whom were fishermen.
