The latest THE Young University Rankings for 2024 highlight the notable presence of 33 Pakistani universities, underscoring Pakistan’s significance in the global academic arena. The rankings reveal that Asia now hosts nearly half of the world’s leading young research universities.

Nanyang Technological University in Singapore maintains its top position in the rankings for the second consecutive year. Established in 1991, it also holds the 32nd place in THE’s World University Rankings 2024. The surge in Asian representation is evident, with the number of Asian universities nearly doubling in five years, reaching 327 universities listed this year compared to 165 in 2020.

Turkey, India, and Iran are among the significant contributors to this rise. Turkey boasts 58 universities in the ranking, up from 23 in 2020, followed by India with 55 and Iran with 46. Paris Sciences et Lettres – PSL Research University Paris secures the second position, while Hong Kong University of Science and Technology drops to third.

Phil Baty, THE’s chief global affairs officer, emphasizes the importance of these rankings in spotlighting emerging institutions and established ones that have excelled in a relatively short span.

This year’s ranking encompasses 673 universities from 79 countries/regions, reflecting an increase from 605 in 2023. Of these, 498 institutions hold ‘reporter’ status, indicating they provided data but didn’t meet eligibility criteria for a rank, marking a notable rise from the previous year.
