Leadership Transition at PTCL
Zarrar Hasham Khan has been appointed as the new chairman of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), replacing Azfar Manzoor. The company disclosed this leadership change in an official notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Tuesday.
“We have to inform you that Zarrar Hasham Khan has been appointed as chairman with effect from March 10, 2025, in place of Azfar Manzoor,” the notice stated.
The appointment marks a key leadership transition in Pakistan’s largest telecom operator at a time when the company is facing financial challenges, despite continued efforts to expand its services and technological capabilities.
Zarrar Hasham Khan’s Profile and Experience
Khan, who was appointed as Secretary of the Information Technology and Telecom Division in September 2024, brings over 20 years of experience in the technology and telecommunications sector.
He holds a degree from Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI) and has further honed his expertise through executive education at Harvard Business School, Oxford University, and London Business School. Additionally, he holds an MBA from the University of Warwick.
In his professional career, Khan has held leadership roles at major telecom companies, most notably serving as Chief Technology Officer at Saudi Telecom Company (STC) in Kuwait. He played a crucial role in one of the largest global 5G deployments in 2019, showcasing his ability to drive innovation and large-scale projects.
With his strong background in technology, Khan’s appointment is expected to drive PTCL’s strategic growth, particularly in digital transformation, 5G expansion, and infrastructure development.
PTCL’s Financial Performance and Market Challenges
Despite a leadership shift, PTCL continues to face financial hurdles. The company reported massive losses of Rs 14.39 billion in 2024, compared to Rs 16.73 billion in 2023.
This resulted in a loss per share (LPS) of Rs 2.82 in 2024, slightly improving from LPS of Rs 3.28 in 2023.
Notably, these losses persist despite an increase in revenue and gross profit, indicating challenges related to operational costs, competition, and sector-wide economic factors.
PTCL, incorporated in Pakistan on December 31, 1995, remains a key player in the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, providing both domestic and international telecom services.
Board Restructuring
In addition to Khan’s appointment, PTCL also announced a board-level change, stating that Mohamed Karim Bennis has ceased to be a director of the company. This restructuring signals a broader effort by PTCL to navigate its financial difficulties and optimize corporate leadership.
Future Outlook
With Zarrar Hasham Khan at the helm, PTCL is expected to focus on:
✅ Digital expansion – Strengthening fiber-optic and 5G networks.
✅ Operational restructuring – Addressing financial inefficiencies.
✅ Strategic partnerships – Collaborating with global telecom players.
The leadership transition comes at a crucial time, as Pakistan’s telecom sector undergoes significant technological shifts, including 5G rollout, digital infrastructure expansion, and increasing competition from private operators.
Whether Khan’s expertise can steer PTCL toward profitability remains to be seen, but his track record in large-scale telecom projects suggests he is well-equipped to take on the challenge.
