In Karachi sugar is being retailed at Rs 105-110 per kg as opposed to last weeks’ Rs 95-100. while the consumers in Lahore are paying Rs 93-100 against Rs 85-90 per kg.

Likewise in Quetta, last week sucrose was available at Rs105-106 per kg as opposed to Rs95-97.

Farid Qureshi General Secretary for Karachi Retail Grocers Group [KRGG] stated that the wholesale rate of sugar is Rs97 per kg.

But Anis Majeed from Karachi Wholesalers Grocers Association [KWGA] said the wholesale rate is Rs94 per kg and retailers are profiting by charging Rs 105-110 per kg. He further blamed the government for misconducting commodities prices inclusive of sugar.
Despite the government’s inquiry last year no action has been taken against anybody related to the sugar and wheat crisis, no quantities of both cash crops were recovered from hoarders, further adding that the miller had simply put the onus on the growers for providing costly sugarcane.
