In a thrilling Big Bash League (BBL) 15 match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Steve Smith and Babar Azam showcased exceptional batting skills to lead the Sydney Sixers to a decisive victory over the Sydney Thunder on Friday.

Sixers Secure Fourth Spot with Dominant Chase

The win propelled the Sixers to fourth place on the BBL 15 points table, strengthening their position for a playoff berth. Their upcoming final group-stage match against fifth-placed Brisbane Heat on Sunday will determine the last team to qualify for the playoffs.

Strong Opening Partnership Sets the Tone

Chasing a target of 190, the Sixers started aggressively with Smith and Babar combining composure and attacking intent. Smith played the role of the main aggressor while Babar provided stability, putting together a 141-run partnership off just 74 balls.

  • Babar scored 47 runs from 39 balls, including seven boundaries, before being dismissed by Nathan McAndrew.
  • Smith continued his aggressive innings, reaching a rapid century off 41 balls with nine sixes and five fours.

Smith was stumped by Tanveer Sangha immediately after reaching his hundred but had already put the Sixers in a commanding position.

Closing the Match with Confidence

Despite losing a few wickets in the latter stages, the Sixers comfortably reached the target with 16 balls remaining. Jack Edwards remained unbeaten on 17 from eight balls, including two sixes, while Lachlan Shaw contributed a quick 13 from seven deliveries to seal the win.

Thunder’s Strong Start Fades

Sixers captain won the toss and chose to field first, a decision that initially seemed risky as Thunder’s David Warner launched a fierce attack. Warner and Matthew Gilkes put on 56 runs for the opening wicket, with Gilkes scoring 12 from 12 balls before Mitchell Starc broke the stand.

Warner continued his aggressive innings, supported by Nic Maddinson, with the pair adding 84 runs in 47 balls. Maddinson scored 26 from 16 before being dismissed on the first ball of the final over.

Warner finished unbeaten on 110 from 65 balls, hitting 11 fours and four sixes, but the Thunder ended their innings at 189 for six.

Bowling Highlights

  • Sam Curran led the Sixers’ bowling attack with three wickets.
  • Mitchell Starc, Jack Edwards, and Ben Manenti each took one wicket.

The Sixers’ balanced performance with both bat and ball has positioned them well as they aim to secure a playoff spot in the final group match.
