Sindh, April 30, 2025 – The Sindh provincial government has decided to provide subsidies on fertilizer and seeds to farmers in a move aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and addressing the challenges faced by small farmers. The decision was made in a key meeting chaired by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Wednesday, with officials from the Agriculture, Food, and Irrigation departments in attendance.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Shah outlined the government’s long-term strategy for improving the agricultural sector, including the introduction of farm mechanization and various subsidies on agricultural inputs. The subsidies are specifically targeted at improving the yield and efficiency of wheat and rice crops, two of the most important crops in the region.
Focus on Small Farmers and Technological Integration:
The Chief Minister emphasized the need for the agriculture department to develop a comprehensive four-year package for small farmers, which would provide them with necessary financial support and technological resources. He also stressed the importance of collaboration between the Agriculture, Food, and Irrigation departments to educate farmers on modern farming practices, water availability, and new technologies.
“It is important for growers to be aware of water availability so they can plan their crops accordingly,” CM Shah said, highlighting the need for efficient water management in agriculture.
Farm Mechanisation and Laser Land Levelling:
As part of the farm mechanisation initiative, Chief Minister Shah proposed the introduction of laser land levelling and Manual Seeder Hand Pusher technology for small farmers owning land between one and 25 acres. These tools are expected to improve efficiency and reduce water wastage.
Laser land levelling, in particular, can help conserve 20 to 30 percent of irrigation water, increase crop yields by 6 to 10 percent, and reduce irrigation time by 50 percent. These measures are expected to result in a 20 percent increase in farmers’ income, as well as prevent waterlogging and salinity, thereby contributing to a more sustainable agricultural system.
Additionally, land levelling services will be offered to farmers on a rental basis, making it more accessible for small-scale growers to implement these advanced practices without bearing the full upfront cost.
Impact on Sindh’s Agricultural Sector:
This initiative comes at a time when Sindh’s agricultural sector is under pressure due to inefficient farming practices and rising costs of inputs. By subsidizing critical resources such as fertilizer and seeds, the government aims to reduce financial barriers for farmers, especially smallholders who struggle to access modern technology and equipment.
The implementation of these initiatives is expected to lead to higher productivity, a more resilient agricultural system, and improved livelihoods for small farmers, while also addressing long-term sustainability concerns regarding water usage and soil health.
