The Punjab government has officially introduced a 60km/h speed limit for motorcycles across the province, including Lahore, following approval from the provincial cabinet. This decision aims to enhance road safety and minimize the growing number of traffic accidents involving motorcyclists.
Strict Speed Regulations for Motorcyclists
A notification issued by the Transport Department confirmed that the new speed limit is now in effect across Punjab. Motorcyclists caught exceeding the 60km/h limit will face fines or legal action as per traffic laws. Officials believe this restriction will play a crucial role in controlling reckless driving and reducing fatal accidents on the roads.
Traffic authorities have urged motorcyclists to comply with the speed limit to ensure their own safety and that of others on the road. Public awareness campaigns are also being planned to educate riders on the importance of following speed regulations.
Helmet Rule Made Mandatory for All Riders in Lahore
In addition to the speed limit enforcement, the Lahore Traffic Police recently introduced a new helmet law that makes helmet use compulsory for all motorcycle riders and passengers, regardless of gender. The regulation, ordered by Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Athar Waheed, is designed to improve road safety and reduce fatalities caused by head injuries in traffic accidents.
Previously, helmet requirements were mostly enforced on male riders, while many female passengers were exempt. However, under the new law, both men and women must wear helmets while riding a motorcycle.

One-Week Grace Period for Compliance
To ensure a smooth transition, authorities granted a one-week grace period for female riders to obtain helmets and comply with the regulation. Following this period, strict action will be taken against violators, including fines and potential vehicle impoundment for repeat offenses.
“Motorcycle riders, especially those working as online bike riders, often view purchasing a second helmet as a financial burden. However, this measure is essential to saving lives,” emphasized CTO Athar Waheed.
Motorcycles Dominate Lahore’s Roads
Officials revealed that Lahore has over eight million registered vehicles, with motorcycles accounting for 53% of the total. Given the high volume of motorcycles on the roads, helmet enforcement has become a top priority for traffic management authorities to prevent accidents and reduce fatalities.
Government’s Focus on Road Safety
With the implementation of speed limits and mandatory helmet laws, the Punjab government is taking serious steps to enhance road safety and protect motorcyclists. Authorities have urged the public to cooperate with these new regulations, as they are designed to save lives and create a safer traffic environment for all road users.
Traffic officials have also encouraged citizens to report violations and unsafe practices to help in enforcing these new rules effectively. As Punjab continues to develop its transport policies, the government remains committed to ensuring safe and responsible driving habits among motorcyclists across the province.
