Digital Transition: Pakistan to Issue Only E-Passports in UAE Starting July 20
In a major step toward modernizing travel documentation and enhancing security, the Government of Pakistan has announced that it will transition exclusively to issuing electronic passports (e-passports) for its citizens residing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) starting July 20, 2026.
This upgrade aligns Pakistan’s travel documents with international benchmarks set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and aims to significantly streamline the immigration process for the overseas community.
Here is everything Pakistani expats in the UAE need to know about this new digital transition:
1. What Changes on July 20?
From July 20, 2026, onwards, all new passport applications processed at the Embassy of Pakistan in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of Pakistan in Dubai will fall exclusively under the e-passport category.
Traditional Machine-Readable Passports (MRPs) will no longer be issued at these locations for new applicants. However, citizens do not need to panic: existing valid MRPs will remain fully functional until their official expiry dates. The embassy advises community members to only apply for a renewal once their current passport has less than six months of validity remaining.
2. The Power of the E-Passport
Unlike traditional documents, the e-passport features an embedded electronic contactless (NFC) chip. This secure chip stores the holder’s biometric data, facial recognition info, and personal details.
Fast-Track Travel: The biggest benefit for travelers is the ability to use automated e-gates at international airports worldwide, drastically cutting down airport queue times.
Enhanced Security: With advanced security layers, the e-passport heavily minimizes the risk of tampering, forgery, and identity theft.
4. Convenient Online Renewals
To save time and avoid long queues at the embassy or consulate, overseas Pakistanis can continue to utilize online renewal services. Digital applications remain seamlessly available through the official portal of the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (DGIP).
