The government has initiated a comprehensive plan to digitize the petroleum supply chain nationwide, aiming to curb smuggling and theft in the sector. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) confirmed that the project is advancing swiftly, with the first-phase prototype expected to be launched in the coming weeks.
In the first phase, digital records for 35 oil marketing companies and refineries are being compiled, covering both imported and locally refined petroleum products. Once the data collection is complete, a testing process will be conducted to ensure system efficiency.
The second phase will focus on digitizing sales at petrol pumps and linking them directly to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to improve monitoring and tax compliance. The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) is spearheading the project and aims to complete both phases within one year.
Officials say the move will significantly enhance transparency, improve revenue collection, and strengthen measures against the illegal fuel trade, while also providing real-time tracking of the supply chain.
