The Ministry of Industries and Production has announced that Pakistan will begin exporting sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and other cars in the next few months.
In the first phase, 50 locally manufactured SUVs by Toyota Indus Motors will be exported, followed by the export of Toyota Indus’ Hybrid Corolla Cross in the second phase.
The Ministry highlighted that 100 Pakistani mechanical engineers have been sent to Japan for training, and their skills and expertise have been recognized by the Japanese industry.
Meanwhile, the federal government is considering a proposal to increase regulatory duty on used imported vehicles in the upcoming budget, to be presented on June 12. The duty on vehicles above 1800 cc may rise by 30%, while large vehicles may see a duty increase from 70% to 100%. A 15% duty may be imposed on used vehicles up to 1800cc, while new and old hybrid vehicles up to 1800cc may continue to enjoy zero duty. This move may make imported used vehicles more expensive in the country.
