John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI, has announced his departure from the company to join the rival AI startup, Anthropic.
A spokesperson for OpenAI commented on Schulman’s exit, expressing gratitude for his role in establishing the company’s foundational research in AI alignment. The spokesperson highlighted Schulman’s significant contributions and dedication, noting that his efforts have laid a robust groundwork for future innovations at OpenAI and within the broader field of artificial intelligence.
In a statement posted on X, Schulman shared his decision to move to Anthropic, stating, “I’ve decided to pursue this goal at Anthropic, where I believe I can gain new perspectives and conduct research with individuals who are deeply engaged with the subjects I am most passionate about. I am confident that OpenAI and the teams I was part of will continue to excel in my absence.”
Additionally, OpenAI President and co-founder Greg Brockman will be taking an extended leave until the end of the year. Brockman’s leave is intended for rest and rejuvenation following his nine-year tenure with the company.
