Netflix Ends Casting Support on Newer Devices

Netflix has disabled mobile casting on most modern Chromecast and Google TV devices, requiring users to navigate the app with their device remotes.

Netflix has disabled the option to cast TV shows and movies from smartphones to most modern streaming devices, a change that has left many users annoyed and confused. The update, rolled out quietly in November, affects newer Chromecast models and Google TV hardware, marking a notable shift in how Netflix wants viewers to navigate its platform.

The company updated its support page to confirm the change, stating, “Netflix no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices.” As a result, users must now navigate Netflix using the remote control that comes with their smart TV or streaming device, rather than from their phone.

The decision first gained attention on Reddit, where subscribers reported losing the casting option after recent app updates. Android Authority later verified the development with Netflix. Many users expressed frustration, calling the change unnecessary and restrictive.

Several Reddit users shared that Netflix’s customer support linked the move to “improving customer experience.” According to one user, support staff said, “If the device has its own remote, you can’t cast.” This suggests Netflix aims to standardize its viewing experience by prioritizing its native app interface over mobile-based casting.

Devices Affected

The casting restriction applies to:

  • New Chromecast devices
  • Google TV streamers
  • Modern TVs with Google TV or Android TV built-in

Users who updated their Netflix app within the past two weeks likely lost the casting feature.

Casting still works on older Chromecast models like the original Chromecast and Chromecast Ultra, since these devices cannot run the Netflix app natively and depend entirely on mobile casting—making them exempt from the new rule.

Subscription Tier Restrictions

Even on older Chromecast devices, Netflix’s ad-supported plan does not allow casting at all. This restriction was introduced earlier in 2025 across all casting devices and still applies. Users must upgrade to a higher-tier plan to use casting on supported devices.

Netflix has published troubleshooting steps for older Google Cast devices, indicating it intends to maintain compatibility for legacy users. However, modern-device users must now rely on remote-based browsing, signaling Netflix’s shift toward a more controlled and uniform app experience across all platforms.
