Pakistan’s Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) has uncovered substantial gas reserves in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, capable of producing 2.14 million cubic feet per day (MCFD), according to state media reports on Thursday.
The discovery, part of the Special Investment Facilitation Council’s natural resource exploration projects, represents a significant step toward enhancing Pakistan’s energy self-reliance. “The reserves have the potential to produce up to 2.14 MCFD, contributing to energy self-sufficiency and encouraging further mining sector exploration,” stated Radio Pakistan.
For years, Pakistan has depended on oil and gas imports to meet its energy demands, facing mounting challenges due to dwindling domestic supplies and difficulties in securing costly international gas.
In a related development, the OGDCL signed an agreement in October with the China Central Depository and Clearing Company to explore and develop Pakistan’s tight gas reserves. This unconventional resource, found in low-permeability reservoir rocks like sandstone, requires advanced extraction techniques but holds immense potential for boosting domestic energy production.
The discovery highlights the growing importance of tapping into Pakistan’s untapped natural resources to meet its energy needs and drive economic progress.
