Jeff Bezos Emphasizes College Degree’s Role in Amazon’s Success

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, has spoken out against the popular idea that dropping out of college is a key to entrepreneurial success. At Italian Tech Week, Bezos highlighted the importance of completing a college degree and gaining professional experience before starting a business.

Rejecting the Dropout Billionaire Narrative

Bezos described tech icons like Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates as exceptions rather than the rule. Both Zuckerberg and Gates launched their companies at 19 without finishing college. In contrast, Bezos founded Amazon at age 30 after spending ten years working in the corporate world following his graduation from Princeton University in 1986, where he graduated summa cum laude.

Value of Work Experience

He encouraged young entrepreneurs to first work at established companies to learn essential skills such as hiring and interviewing. According to Bezos, this experience improves the likelihood of success when launching a startup.

Academic Foundations and Beyond

Bezos also credited his leadership role in Princeton’s Space Exploration chapter as foundational to creating Blue Origin, his aerospace company. He expressed that completing college was a positive experience and beneficial to his career.

Context of Higher Education Debate

Bezos’ support for higher education comes amid growing skepticism among younger generations regarding the value of college degrees, especially given rising tuition costs. Industry leaders like Ford CEO Jim Farley have recently questioned whether attending college should be mandatory, citing the gap between educational expenses and job market opportunities.

Amazon’s Success Today

Today, Amazon stands as a global giant with a market capitalization of $2.64 trillion, a success Bezos attributes in part to the experience and education he gained before founding the company.
